Please take a look at the "Debugging Crashes With GDB" section of
the mod_wsgi documentation https://code.google.com/p/modwsgi/wiki/DebuggingTechniques

It would be nice to get to the bottom of this unfortunately i don't have 
Gentoo skills so cannot replicate this in my test environment.
